Upward Bound Instructor

(1 week of staff training, 6 weeks of instruction)

Description: 7 weeks, Monday- Friday typically from 8:00 AM - 5:00PM, hours and days will vary due to the needs of the assigned summer site (residential or non-residential) at $17.50 per hour. The instructor will teach a 60-75 min course in either literature, social science, math or science depending on available job positions. This position is temporary and subject to termination at will with or without notice or cause and is contingent on grant funding and U.S. Department of Education approval.

Program Description:

The Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program designed to help low-income, potential first-generation college students generate the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. High school students from the East San Gabriel Valley participate in Upward Bound during the school year and the summer. During the academic year, students participate in weekly tutorials at their high school and monthly programs on the Harvey Mudd College Campus. During the summer students will attend a summer program at HMC. A staff of instructors and tutors led by a coordinator instruct and supervise the students during the summer.

Calendar: Dates and times may be modified slightly.

Staff Training Week from (9AM- 5PM) @ Harvey Mudd College (HMC)

June 9-13, 2025
  • Rigorous schedule: workshops and structured activities 9am-5pm


Orientation Week (8AM-5:00PM, hours may vary) @ HMC

June 16-20, 2025
  • Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student recreation and community activities, and continued staff training sessions.
  • Participation in a site specific parent sessions


Summer Programming (hours and dates vary, depending on site)

June 22- July 26, 2025
  • Responsibilities include curriculum development, classroom instruction, assessment and supervision, community building activities and daily staff meetings


Instructor Job Responsibilities:
  • All Upward Bound instructors help in the supervision of students during class and program activities.
  • All summer staff participate in all aspects of project activities: class and study hours, academic enrichment activities, community building time and recreation.
  • Instructors teach at most 2 rotations each day and lead assessment and curriculum development.


Academic:
  • To provide instruction each day of the six-week project
  • To design lesson plans and assessment instruments relevant to achieving designated performance goals and objectives
  • To complete the FESP (including both formal and informal assessments in classroom and study hall) in a timely manner, distributing updates to students during the summer and a final version to parents on the last day of the program
  • To participate in a one week of paid teaching and staff training, this training period is a rigorous program that includes a demanding learning schedule (designed to simulate the students' summer experience) and reading and writing assignments.
  • To enhance the ability of students to complete academic assignments in preparation for a four-year college education in the field assigned to the instruction.
  • To teach college preparatory reading, writing, problem solving, and study skills
  • To teach appropriate technical skills (grammar, calculation skills, lab skills, etc.)
  • To design independent learning activities that challenge students to improve their reading, writing, mathematical, or scientific skills (as appropriate to the discipline) and prepare for college level work. Students are assigned daily assignments each evening; this must include reading and writing each night.
  • To incorporate cooperative learning, journal writing, peer editing and writing groups, and portfolios into your instruction and lesson plans as appropriate to the course goals and assigned discipline.
  • To lead class discussions that require all students to participate and demonstrate preparation for class and engagement with the course assignments and concepts.
  • To fully integrate a college student tutor into the classroom who participates in teaching, planning, assessment, and study hall supervision.
  • To incorporate discussion and development of thinking, study, and/or research skills into your curriculum each day.
  • To complete a five-week syllabus by designated deadlines and submit any revisions to the weekly components of that syllabus to the site coordinator in advance of distribution to students.


Non-Academic:
  • To work with other professional staff members and college tutors during the project and cooperate with them on all aspects of the program, both formally (through daily staff meetings) and informally.
  • To participate fully in supervision.
  • To participate fully in college, career, and personal counseling components of the program.
  • To participate fully in all community sessions, recreational activities, and cultural enrichment activities.
  • To drive students to and from activities, as necessary


Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree (minimum); Master's degree and/or teaching credential preferred
  • A minimum of one-year formal teaching experience or significant classroom experience in an Upward Bound Project
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the desired subject
  • Personal/ professional experience working with low-income, potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Knowledge of the psychological, behavioral, and educational issues affecting the learning potential of low-income, potential first-generation college bound youth
  • Possession of personal characteristics appropriate for instruction


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand, use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
