The Senior Director of Financial Operations, in partnership with the Managing Finance Director, is responsible for the financial planning and management, and the business operations and analysis, of The Georgetown College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). The Senior Director of Financial Operations also leads the financial operations team for the CAS and partners with the financial services team that provides support to CAS. They work closely with the Managing Finance Director to ensure that the financial planning, management, and administration of the CAS aligns with the school's mission and objectives. This position is responsible for the creation, implementation, execution and analysis of the CAS' expense and revenue budgets. The Senior Director of Financial Operations communicates data-supported financial trends, projections, and other KPIs to leadership and various decision-makers within CAS, Main Campus (Provost's Office), and University level.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Utilize input from CAS departments and programs, and in partnership with the planning and financial operations team, develop, analyze, and consolidate the annual operating Budget, meeting Campus and University deadlines.
- Partner with the planning and budgeting team and Director of HCM to assist with the monthly forecasting process for the CAS, utilizing a combination of data analysis, customized methodologies, and information from the Assistant Directors for Financial Operations, to create monthly projection figures for school, campus, and university leadership, to be used for senior/executive level decision making.
- Oversee the initiation, review, and approval of financial transactions for the CAS through a number of financial business processes, including Expense Reports, Requisitions and Purchase Orders, Miscellaneous Payments, and Journal Entries.
- Provide advisement to the CAS' team of Assistant and Associate Directors for Financial Operations, who are responsible for meeting with all departments, programs, and PIs, on an ongoing basis to develop and review their financial and budgetary performance, reconcile accounts, ensure alignment with budget, and monitor compliance with university and, if applicable, sponsor requirements and policies.
- Provide exceptional customer support to departments by accurately anticipating and/or identifying needs, troubleshooting issues, and executing effective resolutions in a timely manner and in compliance with promulgated policies.
- Collaborate with school and campus leadership, along with other campus partners, to strategize on best practices, system and operational enhancements, and change management.
- Work with, and/or advise, members of the CAS Finance office on a number of critical tasks relating to the financial operations of the CAS, including, but not limited to: annual budget development and analysis, monthly reconciliations, continuous and in-depth department and faculty support for all matters and inquiries related to finance and budget, maintenance of faculty research accounts (both internal funds and external/sponsored funds), post-award administration for sponsored grants, monthly forecasting of revenue and expense trends, approval of all financial transactions in accordance with developed budget, university policy, and, if applicable, sponsor requirements, and position budget/compensation analysis and review.
- Act as an expert on, and ensure compliance with, university, campus, and school policies, procedures, and best practices, and will maintain a thorough understanding of the GMS Chart of Accounts fields, values, and how they interrelate, being knowledgeable on pertinent regulatory information in regards to sponsored activity, both generally, and with specific sponsors.
Work Interactions
The Senior Director of Financial Operations reports directly to the Managing Finance Director and supervises 4+ full-time employees, managing the relationships of the "dotted-line" teams supporting CAS (including Accounting, Procurement.) The position also works closely with the CAS' department chairs, program directors, and departmental administrators.
This position interacts with many University departments, requiring excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with a wide range of constituents. These constituents include: department chairs and administrators in 26 academic departments and 12+ interdisciplinary programs, the Provost's Office of Finance and Business Services, Join Office of Research Administration, Sponsored Programs Financial Operations, Accounts Payable, Payroll Services, General Accounting, Advancement, Gift Accounting, Billing and Payment Services, and other partners within University Financial Affairs.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred (MBA or similar)
- 7+ years' progressive work experience in financial analysis and budgeting in a complex environment; preferably in a university or other non-profit setting
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Mastery of Excel (vlookups, pivot tables, macros, etc.)
- Ability to develop innovative approaches and adapt to changes in policies and technologies
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet time-sensitive deadlines
- Ability to interpret and apply university policies and procedures within complex and diverse organization with strong orientation to detail and deadlines
- Strong desire to achieve results with excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and function as a team player
- Possess poise, diplomacy and confidence to handle complex situations, especially those of a confidential nature and in interactions with senior University administrators
- Proficiency with Georgetown University systems including GMS (Workday) and Adaptive Planning preferred

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$80,429.00 - $157,238.93
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
