Job Summary
The SFESOM at the University of Utah is seeking an accomplished academic physician with a demonstrated record of leadership in medical education and a strong understanding of the higher education admissions landscape. They will be a mission-driven and strategic thinker, effective communicator, and a principled leader capable of navigating complexity across multiple campuses with fairness and integrity.
The SFESOM is dedicated to identifying, recruiting, and selecting exceptional students who will contribute meaningfully to the medical profession and advance the school's mission to 1) ensure compassionate, respectful, patient-centered care to all, 2) serve rural and underserved communities and decrease health disparities, 3) engage in discovery and scholarship to advance knowledge, innovation, well-being, and health for all people.
The Assistant Dean will collaborate with faculty and staff to design and implement innovative strategies for outreach, selection, and evaluation of the admissions' processes that reflect the SFESOM's mission and values.
Reporting to the Vice Dean for Medical Education, the Assistant Dean for Admissions oversees the entire admissions process, in collaboration with the Director of Admissions and the administrative staff of the Office of Admissions and serves as the Chair of the Admissions Committee. The estimated effort for the role is 0.5 FTE. A buyout for 50% of time, up to a maximum of the salary equating to 80% of the Associate Dean of Admissions median.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with leaders and staff across the Dean's Office to create and foster mission alignment, collaboration, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and implement a vision for admissions across all SFESOM campuses ensuring alignment with the school's mission and educational goals.
- Oversee all aspects of the admissions process, ensuring the recruitment and selection of the exceptional candidates for the program.
- Chair the Admissions Committee and provide oversight for its subcommittees, including recruitment, training, and evaluation of committee members.
- Ensure full compliance with internal policies and all accreditation-related, regulatory, and legal standards.
- Represent SFESOM admissions to internal and external parties, including University offices, local/regional partners, national medical education consortia, accrediting bodies, and application services.
- Champion a welcoming applicant experience, ensuring all candidates encounter fairness, respect, and transparency throughout the admissions process.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the SFESOM medical education program to premedical advisors, educational institutions, legislative and regional governing bodies, and the broader academic community, strengthening relationships that support recruitment and outreach.
- Collaborate closely with dual degree (e.g., MD-PhD), and specialized program (e.g. regional campus) leadership to ensure recruitment and selection processes align and attract exceptional candidates.
- Analyze and respond to outcomes data and student performance metrics to inform evidence-based improvements to admissions policies and practices.
- Partner with the Office of Advancement to grow philanthropic opportunities to strategically support student scholarships.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- MD or equivalent degree.
- Current academic rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
- Minimum of five years of leadership experience in undergraduate medical education (UME) (e.g., mentoring, teaching, curricular development, assessment, or advising).
- Prior experience in medical school admissions or student affairs related roles are preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to creating a supportive and innovative culture in academic medicine.
- Proven ability to lead effectively in a complex, collaborative and data-informed environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of perspectives.
